What airport should I fly into?

We recommend flying into the Varna Airport (VAR).

If you choose to fly into another airport (like Sofia), then you will need to consider the additional travel time/transportation method for getting to Varna. This can be a fun option if you're looking to be a bit adventurous! But for ease of travel, the Varna Airport is best.

How should I plan my flight layover(s)?

Meaghan has more opinions on this topic than can fit here. So, if you're looking at a specific flight and want advice, please reach out!

How much time will I need on the way to Bulgaria?

The most important layover is the airport where you will first fly into the European Union after leaving the United States. Here, you will go through Customs.

What does this mean? Waiting in line! Give yourself at least 3 hours for this layover.

What city should I choose on the way to Bulgaria?

Meaghan's favorites include (in no particular order): Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Vienna.

Meaghan does not recommend: London, Munich, Paris.

What about flying back to the United States?

Flying back, you do not have as much to consider. For any European layovers on the way home, you likely only need about an hour and a half minimum. This is just for covering any delays.

The first airport you land at in the United States will be where you go through Customs (no European customs on the way home).

If you have another flight after this, you'll want to consider a longer layover in this city. For example: I fly from Bulgaria > Vienna > Washington DC > Roanoke. I will complete customs for returning to the United States in Washington DC, so I'll need a longer layover here.
